What is my hair type?

Updated: Jan 19, 2021

Andre Walker was a hairstylist of Oprah Winfrey who created the Andre Walker Hair Typing System which is a classification system for different hair types. Andre originally created this to market his new range of hair care products but this has been adopted as a hair type classification system since the 1990’s. It ranges from 1a, 1b and 1c which is identified as straight fine, medium, or coarse hair all the way up to 4a, 4b and recently updated with 4c which is defined as defined coil, Z coil and tight coil.

Afro hair ranges from 4a, 4b and 4c and understanding what hair type you are is vital so you can learn how to appropriately moisturize, soften and nourish your hair.

We all know that afro hair isn't the easiest hair texture to work with.

The biochemical deposition of Afro hair is known to be identical of those who are Caucasian and Asian however it is its morphological difference in elasticity and comb ability that causes Afro texture hair to have different needs. This curly disposition leaves the hair to be more susceptible to breakage. Therefore delicate care is needed to preserve hair growth and avoid damage.
